Pneumonia is an inflammation and subsequent infection of the lungs. It can cause difficulty with breathing, produce a cough and cause chest pain. Pneumonia can affect either one or both of your lungs and various forms exist of the disease. Even though medical scientists haven't yet identified the specific infectious organisms responsible for causing the disease, it is believed that eosinophilic pneumonia is caused by infection with atypical bacteria. The pneumonia symptoms usually depend on its cause, but most of the patients cough, have fever and chest pain. These symptoms appear at all the patients with pneumonia, no matter what caused it. Respiratory infections caused by rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, and influenza virus can also lead to pneumonia.

Viral Pneumonia is more variable in course and severity. It can come on suddenly or gradually, and symptoms- which are much the same as those of bacterial pneumonia- can be mild, severe, or anywhere in between. It is less serious than bacterial pneumonia, but if not cared for properly, a second, bacterial pneumonia infection can set in. Bronchitis is a disorder characterized by inflammation of the bronchi or air passages that transport air from the trachea to the lungs. Inflammation of the bronchi leads to the accumulation of mucus, which causes the blocking of the bronchial cells. The body then takes refuge in the cough mechanism to get rid of the accumulated mucus.

In order to determine the necessity of hospitalization among nursing home residents with pneumonia, a group of Canadian researchers has recently conducted a study that involved the collaboration of 20 nursing homes. Half of these institutions were asked to follow their usual medical care procedures, while the others were asked to follow the instructions imposed by the researchers. The risk of acquiring the disease increases in those who have AIDS, heart disease, and diabetes, those who smoke and drink a lot, exposure to certain chemicals or pollutants, and in those who are hospitalized or have had surgery. Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and the type of pneumonia you have.

Signs and symptoms of chemical pneumonia are: dry or wet cough (with bloody or yellowish sputum), the sensation of burning eyes, nose, mouth or throat; chest pain, nausea, difficulty in breathing, the change of voice, headaches, and disorientation.
