The teenage years can be a time of great emotional turmoil as it is the transition from childhood to adulthood. A lot of issues such as peer pressure, search for identity, romantic and family relationships as well as school performance beset teenagers as they undergo this phase. It is inevitable that quite a large percentage of teenagers resort to drug abuse to cope with, alleviate or escape these issues. The reported figures regarding prescription drug abuse among teenagers are alarming indeed. According to studies, one out of five teenagers has abused medication prescribed for pain. One out of five teenagers has also used both tranquilizers and stimulants. One in ten, on the other hand, is into cough medication.

Teenagers are viewing these drugs as a medically safe high. Teens can find prescription drugs easily from the internet, through e-mail, and also from family and friends. Generally these prescription drugs are easy to get and can be sold or traded for other drugs. Pain relievers like OxyContin and Vicodin are the most commonly abused drugs by teenagers. Children are not able to make those distinctions. For example, a person with severe pain due to arthritis or cancer, may be prescribed codeine or another opiate to ease the pain. Kids don't comprehend that this patient doesn't get high. That medication only dulls the pain. However, in the world of teenagers and drugs, this narcotic becomes an opportunity to get high. They don't know the difference.

Two words: "Early education." We can no longer afford to wait until a child is beyond his/her formidable years and on into the teenage and adolescence stages of their lives before we begin talking about the dangers of getting involved with drugs. We live in a very corrupt society and our kids are exposed to the ills and ugliness almost from conception. They watch violence and drug use on TV. From my own personal experience and watching the decisions that teens make while they are abusing drugs, we see that the use of drugs will cloud their judgment, and lower their natural survival instinct. Drug use affects the chemical balance of the brain, intensifying feelings of sadness, depression and loneliness.
