Causes Of Leg Swelling

The general cause of a leg swell is the additional fluid that gathers in the lower extremity tissues. If this swelling remains and is indented by a finger it is termed as Edema Pitting. There can also be other less usual causes for this problem that include Eosinophilic fasciitis and scleroderma which result in the thickness of the skin. Leg pain comes in many forms.

Whatever your leg pain feels like, it can be a source of discomfort and inhibit your ability to stand for long periods, put weight on your leg or simply perform everyday activities. The swelling in the sciatic nerve is often caused by the muscle surrounding it becoming tense and pressing on the nerve for an extended period of time. It can also be caused by a misalignment of the spine and even poor posture. Luckily, there are many ways to relieve this back leg pain, so that you can live pain free.

If the patient is in good physical condition otherwise and they have the lymphedema under control (as much as possible) they can use the elliptical machine. That is, if they can tolerate it from a fitness and medical standpoint. Make sure the lymphedema patient has permission from their doctor to perform exercise, especially an intense exercise such as the elliptical. Look over the list of water retention causes and decide if you are indeed experiencing one or more. Remember, many diseases take years to appear after the symptom does. Thus, you should speak to your doctor if you have any questions regarding water retention in any parts of your body.

Internal injury. In some cases, it can be brought about by an internal injury affecting the legs or failure of the kidney and other internal organs. If there is the presence of blood-clotting, it will also lead to leg edema since there is a blockage in the normal blood flow. It is essential for leg lymphedema patients to wear comfortable footwear with soft padding to avoid foot injuries. While cutting toenails, utmost care must be taken to avoid injury. Wearing tight clothes, socks, or undergarments with tight elastic are a strict no-no.

Individuals with edema interested in caring for their condition at home should reduce the amount of salt in their diet because it could help with the swelling and fluid retention. Also, wearing support stockings can be very helpful for leg edema. When lying down it is important to elevate your legs.
